Friends Don’t Let Friends Eat Seed Oils
Why These “Healthy” Oils Are NOT Doing You Any Favors — And What to Use Instead
You know that friend who always warns you when you are about to make a bad decision? Consider this your nutritional intervention: FRIENDS DON’T LET FRIENDS EAT SEED OILS :)
These so-called “heart-healthy” oils are everywhere — from salad dressings and protein bars to your favorite restaurant meals. But here’s the truth: industrial seed oils are one of the most overlooked contributors to chronic inflammation in the body, and that inflammation may be silently driving many of the health struggles we see today.
Let’s break it down…
What Are Seed Oils — and Why Are They Everywhere?
Seed oils include canola, soybean, corn, cottonseed, sunflower, safflower, grapeseed, and rice bran oils. They have become staples in processed foods because they are cheap, have a long shelf life, and can handle high heat… but how they are made is anything but natural!
Most seed oils are made using high heat and chemicals to extract the oil, which can damage the fats and leave behind harmful residues. These damaged oils don’t belong in your body—and can quietly fuel inflammation over time.
The Problem with Seed Oils: Inflammation Nation
Seed oils are high in omega-6 polyunsaturated fatty acids (PUFAs). While omega-6s are not inherently bad, our modern diets have created an omega-6 to omega-3 imbalance that promotes inflammation. Instead of a 1:1 ratio, many people consume a ratio of 15:1 or higher — a fast track to inflammatory overload.
When you regularly consume seed oils, especially from processed and packaged foods, you may unknowingly be contributing to the underlying inflammation behind your symptoms.
So, What’s the Deal with Inflammation?
Inflammation itself is not evil. In fact, short-term (acute) inflammation is how your body heals a cut or fights an infection. The danger lies in chronic, low-grade inflammation — the kind that simmers silently for months or years.
Chronic inflammation is a hidden troublemaker that can quietly cause damage in your body over time — low-grade, persistent, and often unnoticed until real damage has been done. This type of inflammation simmers beneath the surface for months or even years, quietly interfering with every system in your body.
When inflammation gets out of control, it stops being protective and starts being destructive. Over time, this can set the stage for a cascade of health issues, including:
Weight gain, stubborn belly fat, and insulin resistance
Digestive problems like bloating, IBS, leaky gut, and food sensitivities
Hormonal chaos — from mood swings and fatigue to irregular periods and menopausal symptoms
Autoimmune flare-ups where the body attacks its own tissues
Heart disease and elevated blood pressure
Brain fog, low mood, anxiety, and even depression
If you have ever felt inflamed, puffy, moody, foggy, or just off — chronic inflammation could be the root cause… and here’s the kicker: many of the foods we think are “healthy,” like processed seed oils, can fuel this internal fire every single day.
Over time, chronic inflammation can age you from the inside out. It damages cells, disrupts hormone communication, weakens your gut barrier, and stresses your immune system. The result? A body that feels “off,” exhausted, bloated, and stuck — no matter how clean you think you’re eating.
If you have been spinning your wheels with diets that don’t work, it might be time to look beyond calories and carbs —
and start focusing on what’s actually driving the fire.
Which Oils Are Actually Good for You?
Not all fats are created equal. Some oils heal. Others harm.
Here’s a cheat sheet for your pantry:
Best Oils to Cook With:
Avocado oil: Great for high heat, neutral flavor
Extra virgin olive oil (EVOO): Rich in antioxidants, great for low to medium heat
Coconut oil: Occasional use; antimicrobial properties, good for moderate heat
Best Oils for Dressings & Drizzling (Don’t Heat These):
Extra virgin olive oil (cold-pressed)
Walnut oil
Flaxseed oil (high in omega-3s, but heat-sensitive)
Oils to Avoid (especially in processed foods):
Canola
Soybean
Corn
Cottonseed
Safflower
Sunflower
Grapeseed
If it comes in a giant plastic jug or appears in a long shelf-stable ingredient list, it's time to pass!!!
